History of Vasto

The city is said to have been founded by Diomede and called Histonium; initially, it was a town of the Frentani, later of the Romans; rebelling during the social war, it later became a municipality. It was destroyed by Silla, fortified later by Teodoricus, annexed then to the Duchy of Benevento. In 802 it was conquered and destroyed by Pipin. It suffered many other creulties during the war and was ruled by various feudal vassals; in 1463 it was conquered and attacked by Ferdinand I; from 1496 to 1798 it was ruled by the D'Avalos family. The town suffered several plunders (famous the plundes of Pialy Pasha in 1566) and earthquakes.. It is native town of Gabriele Rossetti, the famous poet and patriot, and the painters Palizzi Brothers, Gabriele Smargiassi and Valerio Laccetti.
